About China
The People's Republic of China is one of the world's oldest countries with a civilization history of 5,000 years.
China is located in East Asia, on the western coast of the Pacific Ocean. Founded in 1949, it is a socialist country with people's democratic dictatorship. It is also one of the most populous countries in the world, with 1.4 billion people and a land area of about 9.6 million square kilometers, making it the third largest country in the world.
China's terrain forms a three-step ladder from west to east, starting from the towering Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and gradually descending to plains and coastlines. This dramatic elevation difference creates rich landscapes from the roof of the world to the eastern coastal areas, including deserts, plateaus, basins, and plains, and nurtures the two major water systems of the Yangtze River and the Yellow River.
China is divided into 23 provinces, 5 autonomous regions, 4 municipalities directly under the central government (Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Chongqing), and 2 special administrative regions (Hong Kong, Macau). The capital Beijing is the political and cultural center of the country, while Shanghai is an important economic and financial hub.
China has vast territory and numerous ethnic groups, with 56 officially recognized ethnic groups. The Han people are the main ethnic group, using Chinese language and characters. Han and ethnic minorities are collectively called the 'Chinese nation', calling themselves 'descendants of Yan and Huang' and 'descendants of the dragon'.
Chinese culture is long-standing, profound, and colorful. As the cultural suzerain of East Asian cultural circle, it occupies an important position in the world cultural system. Due to differences in geographical location and natural conditions, humanities and economy also have their own characteristics. Traditional cultural art forms include poetry, opera, calligraphy, Chinese painting, etc. Spring Festival, Lantern Festival, Qingming Festival, Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, and Double Ninth Festival are important traditional festivals in China.
